'Hysteria' as a word and a concept has been used throughout history to control women that did not conform. It was a made-up disease that gaslighted women with endometriosis, bipolar and other legitimate diseases doctors didn’t take seriously. Witches were burnt at the stake, Janet Frame was nearly given a lobotomy, Ophelia decided to die, as did Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. Our politicians still use the word "hysterical" as an insult because the word insinuates a kind of weakness that is tied to emotion. It’s this binary that bugs me and interests me – the cliché that emotion is an inferior and inherently feminine trait that is at odds with "rational male logic". But look at the powers that have controlled the world up until this point and what they’ve done to this place – it’s clear to me we need to rethink that power dynamic.
